MYTHS AND FAIRY TALES

Troya Praha

Robert Schumann’s Fairy Tales and Charles Loeffler’s songs will set an intimate chamber atmosphere, paving the way for Maurice Ravel’s Ondine to fully unfold. The mythical figure of Ondine, rooted in both German and French tradition, is typically portrayed as a water spirit or nymph. Often seen as ethereal and mysterious, she symbolizes constant transformation. She is deeply tied to nature and its cycles, but also to the complexity of human emotion. Ravel’s composition, written in 1907, is rich in impressionist soundscapes of the early 20th century—evoking the delicacy of a fairy, her watery world, elusive nature, and longing.

More mythical figures—Daphnis and Chloe—take center stage in the second half. They are the protagonists of an ancient Greek pastoral romance, often considered one of the finest examples of idyllic countryside literature, portraying a world of harmony and love. Ravel originally scored this piece for a large symphonic orchestra for Diaghilev’s famous ballet. In this concert, however, it will be performed in a brand-new arrangement for piano trio—making its world premiere. This innovative version promises to be a fresh challenge for both performers and audience alike.
