As you listen to the works of French composers, take a moment before nightfall to gaze into the enchanting world of the zoological jungle—through the eyes of their contemporaries, the Impressionists—and see it as they captured it in paintings filled with vibrant shades, fleeting moments, and intimate moods.
The magic of the days surrounding the solstice is thus amplified by the power of the Sun and its longest appearance in our skies this year. But the Moon, though not full, is also expected to appear in the clear evening sky. It will be the object of our attention, as Rusalka will literally sing to it, her words introducing an instrumental version of the world-famous aria. Hidden in the darkness of the gardens and the hillside above the Vltava, we will conclude the evening with The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams, where Josef Špaček’s violin will be accompanied by a string quintet. But before that, we will hear the 1881 poem by George Meredith that inspired the composer—presented here in the world premiere of its Czech translation.
